What is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?

Post traumatic stress disorder is a mental condition which follows exposure to a terrifying event. The event may be either experienced firsthand or witnessed. These terrifying events are not just limited to military combat experiences, but may also include other trauma, such as assault, serious accidents or natural disasters.

Symptoms can start slowly and develop over months. They can last for years and become chronic. These symptoms may include panic, withdrawal, nightmares, feeling tense or on edge, loss of interest, feeling “numb,” reliving the trauma over and over, having trouble concentrating, irritability and depression. Scientists are not exactly sure about what allows some people to experience trauma and recover, while others develop more lasting symptoms, including PTSD. Current research includes looking at certain areas of the brain which may play an important role, as well as a focus on genes that play a role in memories of fear and “fight or flight” reactions. Treatment of PTSD includes talk therapies and medication.
